O Come, Let us sing unto the Lord; Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with Psalms. Psalm 95:1

Pastor Gilyard & First Lady Janice Gilyard
The History
Elder Eugene Hayward’s first association with the Lord began in Charleston, South Carolina at the Lovely Hill Baptist Church. In 1942, he migrated to New York and in the 1950’s to Hoboken. He became associated with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Blanton, first becoming a Deacon and later a Licensed Minister.
In 1960, he joined the Gethsemane Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Rogers. Continuing the work of the Lord, Elder Hayward and Rev. Griffin started a church on Grand Street and Johnson Avenue in Jersey City.
On December 8, 1963, he was ordained at New Dawn Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, under the leadership of Rev. Griffin. In 1967, he was called to worship at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where conditions that were beyond his control, forced him to move to a new location.
Changing the name to Corinthian Baptist Church, Rev. Ravenell invited Elder Hayward and his congregation to worship with him. In 1974, his dream became a reality; the opportunity to purchase a new home for his worshippers finally arrived. It was a struggle to save for the down payment, but it was well worth it. He, along with his faithful members, few in number but high in spirit, marched to 132 Bergen Avenue where the church is presently located. Rev. Hayward installed two preachers, two evangelists and ordained twelve deacons.
Under his leadership, he organized five choirs, the burning of the mortgage, the installation of a Baptismal Pool and the remodeling of the kitchen. It has been stated that Elder Eugene Hayward and Mother Geneva Hayward desired that Corinthian Baptist Church continue to prosper as we pray and stay together.
